multiple spins: how to keep control

(1/1)

Speedy:
Hi Skippy,

I want to improve my spinning capabilities. With one spin I've no problems but already the second is not really 360. How can I work on it?

Thanks,
Carsten

Fabio:
Hi Carsten!
Probably Skippy has the best explanation to it, but I'll try to give out what I've learned from my own experience (and with Eleonora helping...she was a classical ballet dancer).
First of all, be patient and start without the disc, it's easier if you first learn the movement quite good, because if you learn it bad, trying correct it is quite difficult. So I started in my room very very slowly (don't start going very fast or you'll make mistakes in the process). I usually had something on the wall (like a picture) to help me focusing in a point, then let's say you're learning to spin counterclockwise:

1.face the picture, left foot in front, right back (your weight on right foot), turn a little clockwise with your body and arms to prepare the movement counter (stay with your eyes on the pic)
2.move your arms and body counter and in the same moment move your right foot in the front and change your body weight on your left, while you're moving try to twist the toe of your right foot to the inside and stay on the toes with both feet. Try to look at the pic as far as your neck can twist.
3. When your neck doesn't allow you any further twist... :D ...spin the head very fast counter, trying to focus your eyes again on the pic (this is THE important movement to do, if you do it slowly, or if you stay too much time WITHOUT your eyes on the pic...or the disc, you'll get dizzy as you spin twice or more, because your brain will get disoriented). Put your weight on your right foot again and bring your left foot again in the front.

4. To make another spin after this I usually twist the left foot to the outside, so it's ready to let the body continue its natural movement.

ADVICES:
a) when you start try to di it slowly and focus on the movement only, go easy first and everything will become more natural with practice
b)if you start you can use your arms to balance yourself, so not taking them close to you, this will do better in your stability (because your axis will be larger), but your speed will not be the best! Only with time and lots of body spins you'll be able to place the arms VERY close to your body, and spin like Murph, Tom or Pat.
c) when you start with the disc...if you try to spin for the first time twice or three...don't go immediately for a barrel gitis :D...try just a pancake catch, then try it several times, and try the set. Every spin make a set different, I mean you'll need a longer set for a double spinning gitis than a spinning gitis. The same with the time of the catch, if you make a barrel you'll need a perfect timing in the set ...so start with just spinning once or twice and catching the disc EASY.
d) if you're able to make a double spinning or a triple, don't go out and start makin' them immediately, start always with a warm up, one-catch, one-tricky catch, two-catch, two-tricky catch,...even superman had to take off before flying...

Fly high my friend and good luck with your double-osis... :D

SkippyJammer:
Hello Carsten and Fabio. Multiple spins are very unique to each individual. We all have a favorite way to turn and it's not necessarily related to what spin you prefer or are using to set the disc. I prefer clock spin and like to spin counter clockwise. I know of others who like clock and prefer to spin clockwise and the same for counter. Also what is very individualistic about multiple spins is some people find it easier than others. If you've ever seen Pat Marron or Dave Muphy peel out you'll notice how quickly they spin. Here's some things to work on.

The set is of primary importance. Practice making perfect sets. Set the disc into the wind. With practice you'll be able to 'shade' the disc slightly towards the way you are turning. This will make it easier to catch. Another important skill to attain is the ability to recognize a perfect set which in turn will prompt you to begin your multiple spins. This too is very important.

Start with doing simple one turn to a catch. Then try it with two turns. Then three. Notice if you are late on the disc or early and adjust as needed. Fabio did a very good job describing some techniques to use. Try those.

Something else to practice once you start to get good at this is to have a variety of methods of setting the disc for multiple spins. A body roll, under the leg set, over the shoulder the list goes on.

There is an old maxim that multiple spins make for un-interesting catching positions. So with that said, don't be content with catching it under your leg or behind your back. Peel out to bigger and better moves as you progress.

to improve spinning: study DANCE= especially SPOTTING= Fabio touched on this subject...Skippy talks about the set- You must TRUST the set...as you spin- try bringing one hand into stomach and other into back folded- this increases spin momentum PLUS looks good- if you do it correctly the hands come in and PROPEL you- also notice feet- if you spin to left-RIGHT leg is lifted and goes around FIRST to plant and spin again- the BEST dancers spin one one foot as other generates energy- that is BALANCE. To practice as FABIO says- SPOT a place on wall and slowly rotate body as HEAD continues to stare at point- at last second as head is twisted(behind body rotation)-completely turn head to be AHEAD of body rotation and see SPOT-and spin again :-)

I want to improve my spinning capabilities. With one spin I've no problems but already the second is not really 360. How can I work on it?

Thanks,
Carsten
