Erwin and Jens Velasquez Routine of the Year
« on: September 27, 2007, 04:04:22 AM »
The year was 1976. The sport of freestyle was very young and all one could think about was the endless possibilities of play. That would quickly change to imitation after the finals of the Rose Bowl as two young brothers from New Jersey came on to the scene like a supersonic jet at a World War I air show. From that point forward their style of play, their energy and their drive for excellence were above the rest. Former World Champion Evan David once returned from a tourney where they typically dominated play and expressed a combination of frustration and awe. "I simply don't understand how they could ever lose,” he said. As a tribute to their status of cornerstones and ambassadors of the game, they are the only team in history to receive a standing ovation from the judges after they failed to make the cut at the 2003 World Disc Games. There is no better representative for "Routine of the Year" than Erwin and Jens Velasquez.

Can we nominate ANY routine?  Even one that was not performed at FPA Worlds?

If so, then I would like to nominate the Co-op routine from the German Freestyle Championships of Florian, Carsten, and Christian.  I have some photos during their routine, but no video (does anyone have it to post on YouTube?)  One of my photos that I caught actually has all three players in the air at the same time (as is the disc).  Their level of athleticism, energy, execution, and creativity was extremely impressive.  <Due to Christian having to take a school exam, this routine was not shown at FPA Worlds - however, I hope that we get to see it next year in Italy!>  Not only did these three men run all the logistics of the tournament, including coordinating judges, housing, food, and party, but they played brilliantly in Co-op.  I honestly can't wait to see them play together again.

One of the routines that blew my mind was Tom and Flo at European Championships. No breaks in the flow, very few drops and incredible coreography and passing style to the music.
The wind was horrible and the playing surface, not the best. But they nailed a piece of art.
When they finished I asked Flo how they coreographed all that. He answered "we were jamming..."
Unbelieveble.
My vote goes for them.

There were some awesome routines this year, some that stand out in my memory are...

Pipo, Larry and Paul's dropless Paga final...

Flo, Cartsten and Christian's GFC final...

Randy, Rob and Doug E. Fresh's shredding Virginia States final (I saw on video)...

Eleonora and Silvia's stunning FPAW final...

but for me it's a toss up between -

Fabio, Piccio and Andrea's spine tingling FPAW final...

and Matt and Jake's fantastic FPAW final...
