Skills and Tips for Beginners

Simply playing catch is the root of disc freestyle, and millions of people worldwide play frisbee recreationally. But if you've ever caught a disc behind the back and thought, "what else is possible?" then you're ready to learn more about disc freestyle.

By learning 3 fundamental skills, you'll have the basics down so you can quickly start learning the hottest moves performed by Pro Disc Freestyle™ athletes. These 3 fundamental skills are:

  1. Solid Throws and Catches
  2. Airbrushing
  3. The Nail Delay
The Learn to Jam Checklist:
  • Buy the great instructional video "Zen and the Art of Frisbee Freestyle" from the FPA Store.

There is no better way to learn the basics, and while you're at it pick up a professional freestyle disc. You also get two of these discs when you join the FPA for $10 (includes shipping). (OK, no more selling, but the reason the non-profit FPA exists is to teach people like you to jam :-)

  • Watch the Zen Video and print out and read Freestyle Basics.

  • Play often to develop strong throws and catches. Find a friend, turn on the tunes and practice. Repeat often.

  • Learn to Airbrush.Read Matt and Jake Gauthier's article on how to learn to airbrush. And watch this video clip from the "Secrets of Pro Disc Freestyle" DVD on how to airbrush.

  • Learn to Nail Delay. Read Doug Korn's article on how to learn the nail delay.

Now it's time to start learning moves and the flow of freestyle. Watch videos, visit this and other websites, and watch and play with other freestylers. Often top players will spend time with a new player to help them learn.

More Tips

  • Find a flat place to play that won't make the disc dirty. If you're not at the beach, then find a grass field where the wind, if any, is steady and not blocked by objects. You don't want the disc dirty because it will make it impossible to nail delay (more on that later). And for airbrushing and to help the disc float, it's important to face the wind and even run towards the wind while airbrushing.
